Bible Verses About Parenting

Whether you have a newborn, a teenager who will not talk, or a grown child you worry about from a distance, parenting rearranges you. Most parents carry a quiet fear that they are getting it wrong. Scripture is gentler with parents than parents are with themselves. It gives instruction, yes, but it also gives permission to be tired, to pray for your children when you cannot reach them, and to trust that they are held by someone beyond you.

What Scripture says about parenting

The Bible’s central instruction to parents is less about technique than about atmosphere. Deuteronomy 6 tells parents to keep God’s words on their own hearts first, and then to talk about them naturally — sitting at home, walking along the road, lying down, getting up. That is not a curriculum. It is a description of ordinary family life with faith woven through it: the school run, the washing up, the last five minutes before sleep.

It is also worth being honest about Proverbs 22:6. A proverb states how life generally works, not a guarantee that good parenting produces predictable outcomes. Scripture is full of faithful parents with wandering children and vice versa. If your child has walked away from everything you hoped for them, that is grief, not proof of failure — and 3 John’s line about no greater joy than children walking in truth is a prayer as much as a report.

The two direct commands to fathers are both about restraint: do not provoke your children, do not exasperate them, so they will not be discouraged. Authority in the family is meant to build hope rather than to break spirit. And when you fail at that, as everyone does, Psalm 103 is the passage to sit with. He knows how we are made; he remembers we are dust. If God parents his own children with that much compassion, you can afford to apologise to yours tonight and start again in the morning.

Common questions

What does the Bible say about raising children?

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 is the foundation: keep God’s words in your own heart and talk about them naturally through the day. Ephesians 6:4 tells parents to nurture children in instruction without provoking them to anger, and Proverbs commends consistent, loving discipline. Psalm 127:3 frames children as a gift rather than a burden, which is worth remembering on the hard days.

Does Proverbs 22:6 guarantee my child will return to faith?

Proverbs are wisdom sayings describing how life usually works, not unconditional promises. Training a child well genuinely shapes them, and many do return — but Scripture also records godly parents with wayward children. Keep praying, keep the door open, and hold Philippians 1:6: the one who began a good work is the one who completes it, on a timeline you do not control.

How can I pray for my children?

Pray Scripture over them by name. Isaiah 54:13 — that they will be taught by God and have great peace. Philippians 1:6 — that the good work in them will be completed. Psalm 121 for their protection, and 3 John 1:4 for their walking in truth. Praying specific verses gives you words on the nights when worry has taken all your own.
