Anxiety

Bible Verses About Anxiety

If your chest is tight and your thoughts will not slow down, you are not failing at faith. Anxiety is loud, and it tends to arrive at night, in traffic, in the quiet minutes before sleep. Scripture does not scold anxious people. It speaks to them gently, over and over, and it keeps saying the same thing: you are not carrying this alone, and you do not have to solve tomorrow tonight. Read slowly. One verse is enough to begin with.

15 Bible verses for an Anxious Heart

Scripture quotations are from the World English Bible (public domain).

  1. 01
In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
    Philippians 4:6-7

Notice that peace is described as a guard — something posted around you, not something you have to manufacture.

  2. 02
casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.
    1 Peter 5:7

The reason given is not that worry is useless, but that God cares. That is a kinder motive than most self-help offers.

  3. 03
See the birds of the sky, that they don’t sow, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns. Your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you of much more value than they? Which of you by being anxious, can add one moment to his lifespan?
    Matthew 6:26-27

Jesus answers anxiety by pointing out a window, not by arguing — worry has never yet added a single minute to anyone.

  4. 04
Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient.
    Matthew 6:34

You are only ever asked to carry today. Tomorrow will have its own grace when it arrives.

  5. 05
In the multitude of my thoughts within me, your comforts delight my soul.
    Psalm 94:19

A verse written by someone whose mind would not go quiet either — and who found comfort inside the noise, not after it.

  6. 06
Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.
    Isaiah 41:10

Four promises in one breath: with you, strengthen you, help you, hold you up.

  7. 07
Cast your burden on Yahweh and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved.
    Psalm 55:22

Casting is a deliberate act. Some days you will have to do it again in ten minutes, and that is allowed.

  8. 08
Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.
    John 14:27

The peace offered here does not depend on your circumstances improving first.

  9. 09
Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs it down, but a kind word makes it glad.
    Proverbs 12:25

Scripture takes the physical weight of anxiety seriously — and prescribes something as simple as kindness.

  10. 10
You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.
    Isaiah 26:3

Peace here is tied to where the mind rests, which is why returning to one verse repeatedly helps.

  11. 11
I sought Yahweh, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears.
    Psalm 34:4

Seeking came first, and it was enough. There was no perfect prayer required.

  12. 12
Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls.
    Matthew 11:28-29

The invitation is addressed precisely to tired people — being worn out is the qualification, not the disqualification.

  13. 13
For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.
    2 Timothy 1:7

Anxiety is not your identity, and it is not the last word over your character.

  14. 14
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas.
    Psalm 46:1-2

Very present — not distant, not delayed, not waiting for you to calm down first.

  15. 15
Yahweh himself is who goes before you. He will be with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be discouraged.
    Deuteronomy 31:8

Whatever you are dreading, someone has already gone ahead of you into it.

What Scripture says about anxiety

It helps to notice how often the Bible speaks to anxious people, and how rarely it shames them. The Psalms are full of writers who say plainly that their hearts are overwhelmed, that they cannot sleep, that they are tired of their own tears. Those prayers were not edited out. They were kept, and sung, and handed down — which means that an anxious prayer has always been considered a real prayer.

When Jesus tells his listeners not to be anxious, he is not issuing a command to try harder. He is pointing at birds and wildflowers and asking a question about value. If ordinary, unremarkable things are cared for, what does that suggest about you? Anxiety usually runs on the quiet assumption that everything depends on your vigilance. Scripture answers that assumption directly and repeatedly.

This does not mean anxiety disappears the moment you read a verse. Sometimes it needs a doctor, a counsellor, a friend, better sleep, less caffeine. Faith does not compete with any of that. But underneath all of it there can be a steady sentence you return to when the thoughts start spinning again: I am not carrying this alone, and I only have to carry today.

Common questions

What is the best Bible verse for anxiety?

Philippians 4:6-7 is the passage most people return to: “In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.” It is short enough to memorise and it ends with a promise of peace that guards your heart and thoughts. If you want one even shorter for a hard moment, 1 Peter 5:7 — “casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you” — works well.

Does the Bible say not to worry?

Yes, but the tone matters. In Matthew 6, Jesus says not to be anxious about food, clothing or tomorrow — and then immediately gives reasons rather than rules: birds are fed, flowers are clothed, and you are worth more than both. It reads less like a prohibition and more like someone talking you down gently. Anxiety is treated as something to be answered with care, not punished.

How do I pray when I am anxious?

Plainly, and without a script. Say what is actually frightening you, in the words you would use with a friend. The biblical prayers about anxiety are blunt — “my heart is overwhelmed”, “hear my cry”. If words will not come, read a psalm aloud and let it pray for you. Many people find it helps to end by naming one thing they are thankful for, which is exactly the pattern Philippians 4 describes.
